Traces !!!

Are we all unconsciously biased toward people who have studied in good institutions?

Irrespective of where people reach (professionally), how much money they earn etc etc…..the education (not only academic) that is imparted at a school or college imbibes certain qualities or way of thinking in a person. In spite of how much a person tries, there always will be traces of that upbringing somewhere in him/her and it shows at some of the darkest time of any person’s life, when they are at the vulnerable stage and sometime in daily mundane instances too.

You can’t get away with it or Can you?
Few of you might say thats i am trying to generalize but lets face the fact that there are numerous instances of people coming from a certain place have some particular attribute common in them. Ofcourse exceptions are always there :)

PS: This is not a post written to evaluate a person, so don’t think along those lines. Neither is it written because someone has said something to me. Just something I have been observing for a while now and I wanted to know your inputs on it.

Me first! =P

Dude, you're right. I've noticed it too. Don't know how to put it in words but...yeah, I've noticed it.

Our Deepak boi is always right ^_^

You're right. I've noticed it too. In fact, I've noticed it in myself too. :D
I spent 13 years in a strict, Anglo, almost-convent kinda school and I think I have the same discipline in my life right now that was forced onto me right from the time I was 5 years old.

It matters. Where you come from in terms of your academic institution matters...right from to the people around you (often) to the places you land up being.
Good post D...liked reading it.

i agree to what u hv said.

like one's family, one's alma- mater also plays a significant role in shaping one's personality/ attitude/ way of thinking etc.
so one tends to get unconsciously biased with one's institution and fellow- members , just in the same way one would get biased for one's family and friends.

guess u cant get away with it. these traces and these ties remain with u for good :)

true...its like radioactive elements are present in institutes and when you move awa...you have these elements embedded in your system that call out...

Ah...sorry...came out a tad too sarcastic than i wanted but hey...

I really don't agree too much. For once I can not be labelled back to my school or my college...And anyhow I hate labelling....

you being a IIT grad does not a make an iota of difference to my life...

I have always liked you, respected you, and have made an effort to be a friend of yours because of you as a person...

What you are might be a result of where you have studied from, but at that same point of time... I know people who have been grads of "not so good" institutes and are gem of people... and not worth letting go ever...

At the end of the day, an institute would give you something... bad or good or both... how you take it, how you work on it, how you life your life after getting what you got... is an individual activity...

What you said here makes sense... because we are usually a result of what we have been through... thoda technically analyse karne ki koshish karen to the environment in a grand institute vs. in a low end college differs a lot... and that changes a lot of things...

this discussion might and would carry on forever :) abhi main chup ho jaata hoon :D

I think we r biased n this is natural way of thinking ..ab i m sure u can deny the fact that some one studied in IIT can be dumb ..but on the otherside there one more aspect which actually bothered me that ..if someone is from good institute ..that doesn mean he/she is cultured person .....

@Prashie
the first half ur post mentions something, which i clearly state at the end of my post. I am not raising this issue to judge a person. Your second half does make proper sense w.r.t post. I agree its an endless discussion.

@chitra
naah, IIT grad wont be dumb (atleast academically) :D

As for culture, till few yrs back there were schools which were known to produce cultured people like Doon, Mayo etc. Things are different now cuz of different factors though namely political pressure and economics...

Yes,I agree with you. Traces of a person's upbringing always remain intact. Upbringing is indeed very important. We don't realize this while we are mixing with other people in our daily life, but it creates differences when some crucial decision is about to be taken. I can tell you this from the little experiences that I've had with my friends in class.

I have seen this in myself too.. I have observed little subtle changes in myself during my PG.. An institute gives u something you can never leave behind.. even the attitude to face the life changes :)

@butterfly
very well said and u r right abt crucial decisions

@kishley
i know.....both of my courses at DU and IIT has imbibed certain attributes in me, which i am really proud of and one of them is surely "attitude to face life changes" :)

The surronding your in makes a big difference in your life, you can be the same or you make the change....90% is within us, 10% is what others can do to you.......

in the end You become what you want become.
but i do like your view too. The difference is the opinion.
